So everyone knows who we are talking about:
YHWH = LORD
Elohim = Mighty Ones or God
Ruach HaKodesh = Set Apart Spirit or Holy Spirit
Yahushua / Yahshua / Yehushua / Yeshua = Jesus

Anointing

משׁחה משׁחה
mishchâh moshchâh
meesh-khaw', mosh-khaw'
From H4886; unction (the act); by implication a consecratory gift: - (to be) anointed (-ing), ointment.

The two are referring to anointing in 2 types of ways. One way is being physically anointed with oil, and the second way to be Spiritually anointed by Ruach HaKodesh (The Holy Spirit). The Spiritual type of anointing is called "unction" by the Spirit. At times, a physical anointing precipitates a Spiritual anointing but, a Spiritual anointing is most certainly not dependent upon a physical anointing. The practical application of anointing is performed for various reasons.
1. To be set apart or consecrated (dedicated) to YHWH for HIS service.
2. To sanctify or cause something or someone to be made Holy, sometimes performed before a blessing.
3. To show as an OT (an outward visible sign) when someone is inaugurated or dedicated for a particular task or purpose such as a worldly kingship or office.
4. As "unction" By Ruach HaKodesh (The Holy Spirit), for the purposes of YHWH to speak through someone by speaking into a persons Spirit, or to perform an act or task directed by YHWH for various reasons, or to serve YHWH for HIS Kingdom purposes through an extended work.

In the B'rit Chadashah (New Testament) the Greek word for the common type of anointing is aleipho, which means:

"to rub, to cover over, besmear ... In the case of sick persons and also of the dead, they rubbed the whole body. ... In James 5:14, the word is used in the aor. part. aleipsantes which means that the rubbing with oil was the medicinal means applied prior to prayer." (The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament, Spiros Zodhiates, p.119)

Aleipho is the Greek word for the common practice of rubbing oil in the hair or rubbing oil on the body for various reasons (including for medical purposes). For example, when we put sunscreen on our skin, when we put hand lotion on our dry hands, etc., then we are "anointing" our skin in a common medicinal manner, which is what aleipho means. Massage oil is not only a medium that a therapist uses to make the skin slick for the massage, it is also a medicinal anointing oil, when the oil contains herbs and spices that are good for the skin and muscles.

The main Greek word for the "sacred" type of anointing (in which the Ruach HaKodesh is involved) is chrio (Nestle/Strong's 5548), which is never used in connection with healing.

Luk 4:18 The Ruach of YHWH is upon me, because he hath anointed5548 me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
Act 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Yahushua, whom thou hast anointed5548, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
Act 10:38 How YHWH anointed5548 Yahushua of Nazareth with Ruach HaKodesh (The Holy Spirit) and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for Elohim was with him.

A similar Greek word is charisma, which means "anointing.".

The first occurrence of anointing in Scripture is recorded in Gen 28:18 - And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
Gen 28:19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
Gen 28:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If Elohim will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Gen 28:21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall YHWH be my Elohim:
Gen 28:22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be YHWH's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Anointing with oil was also instructed by YHWH and we believe it is important to continue in this instruction. This is carried forth into the "New Testament" in:
Mat 6:17 - Mat 6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; Mat 6:18 - That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Mar 14:8 - She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
(Yahushua was anointed with Spikenard by the woman, before he was slain as the Passover Lamb.)
Mar 16:1 - And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Yahushua, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
Luke 7:46 - My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.(Yahushua anointed by woman)
Jam 5:14 - Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: Jam 5:15 - And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
1 John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
Rev 3:18 - I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye salve, that thou mayest see.

Anoint occurs 35 times in Scripture
Anointed occurs 98 times in Scripture
Anointing occurs 28 times in Scripture
Anointest occurs 1 time in Psalms 23:5
Anointedst occurs 1 time in Genesis 31:13
If you include the words "pour" and "poured", as they are often also referring to anointing, the list grows to over 200 times that anointing in some form is referenced! Of course some of those are not referring to anointing but we did not sort them out for this document and also did not make the number just over 300 as it would be by including each and every instance.

Anointing was and still is a common practice by those who wish to make practical application of YHWH's directives and or HIS examples.

Yahushua HaMashiyach means "Yahushua the Anointed One " in English. Sometimes you will see it written as Yahshua and also as Yeshua. In the Greek, you will find it written as Jesus.

HERE ARE SOME BIBLICAL HERBS, FLOWERS AND SPICES AND THEIR MOST COMMONLY ACCEPTED SPIRITUAL SIGNIFIGANCES
Click the links for high-res pictures!

Lign Aloe or Aloes wood: for me, aloe signifies the Ruach HaKodesh or Holy Spirit - the oil of the lign aloe tree mentioned in the Book of Psalms and also in Songs of Solomon is a very expensive and highly sought after oil. Decide for yourselves about this representation...

Cassia: humility and submission - the heart of a servant; our willingness to subject ourselves to YHWH and HIS instructions and put any brothers or sisters needs above our own. Also signifying our desire to carry out YHWH's commandments as the foundation for our relationship with HIM and our Brothers and Sisters. Cassia is one of the four principal spices of the Holy Anointing Oil described in Exodus.

Cedars of Lebanon (cedars in general): for strength, longevity, restoration to wholeness - by YHWH's instruction, cedar wood was included in the items for cleansing and used to anoint a restored leper’s house. Cedar oil has strong antiseptic qualities.

Frankincense: for intercession, purity and Divinity - representative of our desire for increased purity before YHWH and one another; to take up the mantle of Yahushua and strive to be as he is. Frankincense was used on the Altar of Incense in temple times. It was also one of the 3 gifts the Magi brought to Messiah as a child in Bethlehem.

Hyssop: for cleansing and purification - by instruction of YHWH, hyssop was used in religious rituals of the Hebrews for cleansing and purification. There is some disagreement as to which type of Hyssop was the standard for use in Biblical days. Some believe it was an exotic type not indigenous to the area. Some others believe that the Hyssop to be used would necessarily be somewhat indigenous to the area as to be readily available. We agree with this second view. One type of Hyssop that we feel was readily available was Hyssop Officinalis var. decumbens. Testing has proved that this particular variant of hyssopus officinalis is the more anti-microbial type. Again, decide for yourselves...

Lily of the Valley: for honor and pure heart - this is a beautiful, delicate white flower.

Myrrh: for purification and preparation for the KING of Glory - The Myrrh Anointing; killing off the desires of our flesh (purification) and preparing ourselves (preparation) for our relationship with YHWH. Queen Esther was bathed in oil of myrrh for six months and six month with sweet odors, and with other ointments of the women, before her presentation to the King.

Pomegranate: suggests a fruitful land, blessings and the favor of YHWH - Pomegranates were used to decorate the temple and embroidered on the hem of the high priest’s robe. From the Brook of Eschol, pomegranates, figs and grapes were fruits that Joshua and Caleb brought back from spying in the land of Cannan, as proof to show it's bountiful fruits.

Rose of Sharon: is for beauty - this flower depicts the beloved of us. Here is a white one.

Saffron: is for a fragrant heart - a spice mentioned as one of the chief spices in the garden described in one of the Songs of Solomon.

Spikenard: signifies intimacy, adoration and extravagant worship - A Spikenard based ointment was used by Mary to anoint head & feet of Yahushua.
